DITNB

Detroit is the New Black

In an art gallery, the pedestals and armatures should elevate the artwork, not compete with it. We approached the design of this retail fixture package with that in mind.

Some clients want to have input in nearly every step of the design and manufacturing process. Some are very hands off. There’s not necessarily a right or wrong path, but in this case, Detroit Is The New Black founder Roslyn Karamoko gave us a lot of freedom to propose a fixture package for her newly renovated flagship store.

DITNB is something of an outlier in the local retail scene because of the intermingling of fashion and art, neither presented with hierarchy or preference.

In a lot of ways Roslyn operated her store as a gallery, a fluid, ever-evolving space which may look different anytime you visit it.

In order to support this vision, the fixtures of DITNB needed to be understated, flexible, and durable.

We approached this challenge by drastically limiting material selections and instead focused on the variety of forms that could be achieved with that limited palette of line and material.

We strove to create a functional store that feels both artful and considered.

Each piece has subtle details to be discovered, adding to the experience of exploring what the store has to offer.
